Absolute soundness is essential. Breeders and judges should at all times be careful to avoid obvious conditions or exaggerations which would be detrimental in any way to the health, welfare or soundness of this breed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From time to time certain conditions or exaggerations may be considered to have the potential to affect dogs in some breeds advertisely, and judges and breeders are requested to refer to the Breed Watch section of the Kennel Club website here www. the-kennel-club.org.uk for details of any such current issues. If a feature or quality is desirable it should only be present in the right measure. However if a dog possesses a feature, characteristic or colour described as undesirable or highly undesirable it is strongly recommended that it should not be rewarded in the show ring. <em>(Ge\u00e4ndert 2018)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>General Appearance<br \/>\n<\/b>Strongly built, short coupled, very active, broad in skull, broad and deep through chest and ribs, broad and strong over loins and hindquarters.<\/p>\n<p><b>Characteristics<\/b><br \/>\nGood-tempered, very agile <strong>(which precludes excessive body weight or substance). <\/strong><i>(Ge\u00e4ndert am 12.1.2009)<\/i> Excellent nose, soft mouth; keen love of water. Adaptable, devoted companion. <i><br \/>\n<\/i><br \/>\n<b>Temperament<br \/>\n<\/b>Intelligent, keen and biddable, with a strong will to please. Kindly nature, with no trace of aggression or undue shyness.<\/p>\n<p><b>Head and Skull<br \/>\n<\/b>Skull broad with a defined stop; clean cut without fleshy cheeks. Jaws of medium length, powerful not snipey. Nose wide, nostrils well developed.<\/p>\n<p><b>Eyes<br \/>\n<\/b>Medium size, expressing intelligence and good temper, brown or hazel.<\/p>\n<p><b>Ears<br \/>\n<\/b>Not large or heavy, hanging close to head and set rather far back.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mouth<br \/>\n<\/b>Jaws and teeth strong with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i. e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws.<\/p>\n<p><b>Neck<br \/>\n<\/b>Clean, strong, powerful, set into well-placed shoulders.<\/p>\n<p><b>Forequarters<br \/>\n<\/b>Shoulders long and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">sloping <strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">well laid back, with upper arm of near equal length, placing legs well under body. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>(Ge\u00e4ndert 2018) <\/em><\/span><\/span>Forelegs well-boned and straight from elbow to ground when viewed from either front or side.<\/p>\n<p><b>Body<\/b><br \/>\nChest of good width and depth, with well sprung barrel ribs \u2013 <strong>this effect not to be produced by carrying excessive weight.<\/strong> <i>(Ge\u00e4ndert am 12.1.2009)<\/i> Level topline. Loins wide, short-coupled and strong.<\/p>\n<p><b>Hindquarters<br \/>\n<\/b>Well-developed, not sloping to tail, well turned stifle. Hocks well let down, cowhocks highly undesirable.<\/p>\n<p><b>Feet<br \/>\n<\/b>Round, compact; well-arched toes and well &#8211; developed pads.<\/p>\n<p><b>Tail<br \/>\n<\/b>Distinctive feature, very thick towards base, gradually tapering towards tip, medium length, free from feathering, but clothed thickly all round with short, thick, dense coat, thus giving \u00b4rounded\u00b4 appearance described as `Otter\u00b4 tail. May be carried gaily, but should not curl over back.<\/p>\n<p><b>Gait \/ Movement<br \/>\n<\/b>Free, covering adequate ground, straight and true in front and rear.<\/p>\n<p><b>Coat<br \/>\n<\/b>Destinctive feature, short dense without wave or feathering, giving fairly hard feel to the touch; weather resistant undercoat.<\/p>\n<p><b>Colour<br \/>\n<\/b>The only correct colours are <em>(Ge\u00e4ndert 2018)<\/em> wholly black, yellow or liver \/ chocolate. Yellows range from light cream to fox red, <strong>and livers\/chocolates range from light to dark <\/strong><em>(Ge\u00e4ndert 2018).<\/em>\u00a0 <strong>A<\/strong> small white spot on <strong>the<\/strong> chest <strong>and rear of the front pasterns is<\/strong> permissible. <strong>Any other colour or combination of colours <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">is not permitted<\/span><\/strong><em> (Ge\u00e4ndert 2018)<\/em><strong><em> unacceptable <\/em><\/strong><em>(Ge\u00e4ndert 2025).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Size<br \/>\n<\/b>Ideal height at withers: Dogs 56-57 cms (22-22 \u00bd ins). Bitches <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">54 <\/span><strong>55<\/strong><em>&#8211; (Ge\u00e4ndert 2018)\u00a0 <\/em>56 cms (21 \u00bd &#8211; 22 ins).<\/p>\n<p><b>Faults<br \/>\n<\/b>Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and it\u00b4s effect upon the health and welfare of the dog.<\/p>\n<p><b>Note<br \/>\n<\/b>Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Note for prospective puppy buyers <\/strong>(2025)<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Size \u2013 The Kennel Club breed standard is a guide and description of the ideal for the breed; the size as described does not imply that a dog will match the measurements given (height or weight).
